Diabetes ‘breakthrough’ unravels with formal retraction

Diabetes insulin tester

Once proclaimed as a major advance in the field of diabetes research, the results of a highly scrutinized Harvard University study have been retracted after 3 years of debate, STAT reports. The 2013 study, originally published in the journal Cell, initially reported that a hormone in the liver could start up insulin production in mice, a finding that meant a solution to regular insulin injections for diabetes patients existed within their own bodies. After failing to reproduce their results in the following years, the researchers submitted an official retraction earlier this week.
